‘A Common Sense Solution’: Former Trump Ambassador to Denmark Defends His Desire to Buy ‘Unprotected’ Greenland

Carla Sands, President Donald Trump’s former Ambassador to Denmark, called his desire to buy the Danish territory of Greenland a “common sense solution” to “a giant territory that is not defendable.”

Sands appeared on Newsmax Friday, explaining why it was a good idea for the U.S. to purchase the Arctic territory.

“This is a real threat to the Kingdom of Denmark because what makes them a major player is that they have, I would say, the control of Greenland, largely because they control their foreign policy and their defense policy,” Sands said. She continued:

But, let’s look at Denmark itself. It’s a country of about 5 1/2 million people and they don’t have the resources to develop Greenland. There is no development there. I mean, Denmark helped to fund some airports in Greenland when the Chinese government tried to fund and construct them several years ago, but there’s no road between any town in Greenland. There’s zero infrastructure, basically, and it’s a gigantic area.

So, the idea that little Denmark, which can’t even defend its own territory — the small country of Denmark — can defend Greenland, is preposterous. So, they can’t afford to defend it and they can’t afford to develop it, there’s no development. And, so, I think that what President Trump is suggesting is a very common-sense — he’s the third U.S. president to make this proposal — it’s a common-sense solution to a thorny problem of, what do you do with a giant territory that is not defendable and not developable by this small country, Denmark? And, it’s part of North America. And, so, just like he’s talking to Canada, well, Greenland is just right by U.S. and Canada.

Sands did not acknowledge that Denmark was a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which requires the kingdom and its territories to be defended by other member countries (including the U.S.) if it were to come under attack.

“The idea that we would leave it unprotected?” Sands asked. “That’s it! For a president like President Trump that says ‘America First’, meaning, we don’t want adversaries controlling this large body with a lot of resources, and a lot of critical minerals just off our coast — it’s not going to happen.”

Greenland’s prime minister rejected the notion, saying, “We are not for sale and will never be for sale.”
